Urgent Care

Urgent Care Center in Le Mars, IA

Floyd Valley Healthcare offers adult and pediatric urgent care in Le Mars, IA. We understand that time is of the essence when dealing with urgent health issues or injuries. We want to make it as seamless and stress-free as possible for you and your family to get the time-sensitive and immediate care you need. We accept walk-in patients, Mondays through Sundays, or you can call to speak with someone and determine whether you should be treated at our urgent care facility, the hospital or your primary care physician’s office.

What Is Urgent Care?

An urgent care facility provides immediate diagnosis and treatment for time-sensitive, non-life-threatening conditions. This may include treatment of illnesses and injuries, ongoing management of existing conditions or walk-in care for minor emergencies. An urgent care clinic is designed to bridge the gap between family care or primary care and hospital or emergency room care. It offers after-hours services for patients whose doctors’ offices are closed, and it is typically faster, cheaper and less stressful than waiting in an emergency waiting room.

How Is Urgent Care Different from Emergency Medical Care?

Not every medical urgency requires a trip to the ER. Urgent care provides solutions for conditions that require quick treatment or occur outside normal doctor’s office hours but are not serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit. While Floyd Valley Healthcare’s emergency room is staffed 24/7, our Urgent Care clinic is only open during set hours and does not offer the same level of specialized care.

Patients may have to wait for hours in a busy, noisy hospital emergency waiting room, but we try to get patients seen as quickly as possible while providing a safe, quiet and comfortable waiting area. Our urgent care clinic typically treats minor injuries or illnesses for patients of all ages who are unable to see their primary healthcare provider. We have an on-site laboratory and imaging and radiology services through the FVH main campus to ensure swift diagnosis and treatment.

When Should You Visit an Urgent Care Center vs the Hospital?

Some injuries and illnesses only require urgent care treatment rather than hospitalization or more advanced care. You should visit an urgent care center if your condition:

  • Is not life-threatening.
  • Does not involve major blood loss, infection or head or spine injury.
  • Could be treated at your doctor’s office if it were open.
  • Requires basic treatment, care or administration of medications.
  • Involves a minor burn, cut, or injury that doesn’t require medical imaging or surgery.

  • Chest pain, arm pain, heartburn, shortness of breath or other signs of a heart attack

Can You Wait to See Your Primary Care or Family Doctor?

Some minor conditions can wait until normal doctor’s office hours. While it can be hard to wait, especially if you feel uncomfortable, you may end up saving money. Some issues that should be treated by your family doctor or primary care physician include:

  • Minor rashes that aren’t spreading
  • Chronic health conditions that aren’t urgent or life-threatening
  • Cold, flu or allergy symptoms that aren’t severe or extreme
  • Routine immunizations and vaccinations
  • Minor aches and pains that aren’t significantly impacting your daily life or getting worse
